Our History

The beginnings of SAMTA date back to the spring of 1988. A group of independent piano teachers from the Joliet area met together to form a local association for the purpose of working together for the growth of the individual teacher. To stimulate interest in good music and student achievement, they offered a variety of educational and inspirational programs as well as a forum for the exchange of ideas.

In April of 1992, they chose to become a local chapter of the Illinois State Music Teachers Association: Joliet Area Music Teachers Association (JAMTA). As time progressed, teachers from a broader area joined the group. As recently as 2018, members resolved to change their name to Southwest Area Music Teachers Association (SAMTA) to reflect the current membership.

Our members are dedicated to a common goal: the advancement and growth of independent music teachers as well as their students through quality programming at monthly meetings and sponsorship of educational and performance opportunities. We continue to cultivate friendship and camaraderie through the exchange of ideas and experience as we share our love of music.
